About NOVELOUS

NOVELOUS is an app for reading Japanese light novels. While many people are already familiar with the countless anime and manga series born in Japan, light novels, which often serve as their source material, remain lesser-known. This is partly due to the lack of widespread translations.

Through NOVELOUS, Shogakukan, one of Japan’s leading publishers, will introduce North American readers to light novels that have yet to gain wide recognition, offering translations directly from the source.

Dive in and immerse yourself in the amazing culture of light novels! And as for aspiring authors, why not take your first step toward a bright future as a writer by publishing your work on NOVELOUS?

About Shogakukan

Shogakukan is a major Japanese publishing company that has produced numerous comic works, including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Doraemon, and Inuyasha. The company has also published many light novels, a medium that often serves as the basis for manga and anime. Starting in January 2025, it will launch the app NOVELOUS, allowing readers in North America to enjoy light novels.

Contest Prompts & Other Requirements

Prompt 1: “Love Transcends Boundaries”

What we’re looking for in this prompt:

A youthful romance that transcends borders. We’re looking for stories where love blossoms despite cultural divides—whether it’s between people from different countries, different species, different worlds, or even across different times and dimensions. Show us how your characters navigate and celebrate their differences, overcoming challenges to create a bond that bridges cultures. As long as cultural differences are involved, any concept is welcome!

Prompt 2: “The End is Now”

What we’re looking for in this prompt:

When you realize the world will cease to exist in a year, how will you live?

The reason could be a natural disaster, a man-made catastrophe, an alien invasion, or something entirely unexpected. What matters is this: the clock is ticking, and everyone knows it. We are looking for stories that dive deep into this one-year timeline. How do people react when the end is certain? How does society, culture, and individual behavior change when faced with imminent doom—or the slim possibility of salvation?

How to Enter

1

After carefully reading this contest page and understanding all the rules and requirements for both authors and entries, go to the Honeyfeed site and log in.
